The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has just announced that the first phase of the FY 2024 H-1B visa lottery has ended. This means that this year's tense and exciting “lottery” has come to an end, and all applicants who submit H-1B visa applications, regardless of whether they are selected, will be informed of the results to start the next section of their journey. Many of my friends exclaimed that their “heart can't take it anymore”! I also can't help but feel that this year, the Immigration Bureau is really “thunder and lightning”.

The H-1B visa is a visa category opened by the U.S. government specifically to attract the world's best high-tech talent. Foreign nationals with H-1B visas can work in the United States in specific occupations such as information technology, engineering, and scientific research, and applicants who are selected in the lottery will be given the opportunity to work and live in the United States. It can be said that H-1B is one of the most popular U.S. visas in recent years.
According to statistics, more than 500,000 applications were received for the first phase of H-1B visas this year, but the number of open visas was only 85,000, including 65,000 general H-1B visas and 20,000 supplemental (Master's Cap) visas for high-tech professionals for foreign students. As a result, the competition for this lottery is fierce, and the Chinese win rate is only about 15%.
Applicants who have not been selected should not be discouraged, H-1B visas can still be “picked up” in the second phase of the lottery, and according to the experience of previous years, there may be a third phase. We wish all of our friends success in the future lottery.
